Videos of an apparent artillery ambush have emerged and show Russian forces taking heavy hits. A retired US Army general said Russians were making "opening day mistakes" 18 months into the war. Russian forces have made similar mistakes repeatedly in the war in Ukraine. Ukrainian forces, of course, are not infallible, and mistakes have jeopardized operations, including the opening phase of the ongoing counteroffensive, according to experts who visited areas near the front. They also moved the wrong way, and sometimes they ran into deadly minefields covered by defending Russian forces — traps not entirely unlike the ambush seen in the recent videos.

REUTERS/Stringer/File photoKYIV, July 31 (Reuters) - Ukrainian forces have recaptured nearly 15 square km (5.8 square miles) of land from Russian troops in the east and south over the past week during their counteroffensive, a senior defence official said on Monday. Kyiv's forces have now retaken 204.7 sq km in the south since they launched a major push against Russian forces early last month, Deputy Defence Minister Hanna Maliar said on the Telegram messaging app. Maliar said Kyiv's troops had retaken 2 sq km in the past week on the Bakhmut front, bringing the total territory recaptured there to 37 sq km since the counteroffensive began. In the south, where Ukrainian forces are trying to advance towards the cities of Berdyansk and Melitopol, she said that Kyiv's troops had recaptured 12.6 sq km in the last week. Russian troops tried to attack on two northern fronts near Kupiansk and Lyman, but failed to break through, she said.

There’s simply no systematic pulling apart of the Russian defensive system that I could observe,” Gady tweeted. “Weakening Russian defenses to a degree that enables maneuver,” which will include the use of cluster munitions, is a critical task in the weeks ahead. It is far too early to tell whether the Ukrainian counteroffensive has entered a more dynamic phase. The Kremlin has seized upon the slow progress of the Ukrainian counter-offensive: a rare opportunity to go beyond damage limitation. “Russian defensive lines are not all contiguous or uniformly suited for strong defence.

The fired Russian general had demanded changes after suffering losses in artillery battles with Ukraine that were crucial to holding their defensive lines. According to the US officials, Ukraine has expressed a desire to press south toward the occupied city of Melitopol, near the Sea of Azov. Doing so would allow Kyiv's military to split the territory that Russia currently occupies and threaten its hold on the Crimean peninsula. Ukraine has liberated eight settlements in southern Ukraine over the past two weeks as its counteroffensive continues, the country's Deputy Defense Minister Hanna Maliar said Monday. Maliar noted on Telegram that Ukrainian troops "were both on the offensive and on the defensive" last week. Ukrainian troops "advanced deep into the enemy in several areas," she said. "Over the past week in the east, the enemy has fired more than 5,800 rounds and used 277,022 rounds of ammunition," she added. In southern Ukraine, meanwhile, there was an offensive in several directions in the past week, she said.

Ukrainian servicemen take part in a military training exercise not far from front line in the Donetsk region on June 8, 2023. Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said Ukraine's counteroffensive is proving tough for its forces but progress is being made, with Ukraine retaking a number of settlements in Donetsk. Ukraine's Defense Ministry said Monday that "seven settlements were liberated" in the last week of fighting in Donetsk. "Seven settlements were liberated: Lobkovo, Levadne, Novodarivka, Neskuchne, Storozheve , Makarivka, Blagodatne," she said. Defense analysts at the Institute for the Study of War noted that Russian forces had reportedly launched a counterattack on June 12 in western Donetsk and that some Russian sources reported that Russian forces had recaptured Makarivka.
